Feroke’s name goes back to Tipu Sultan, who called the place Farookhabad and wanted to make it his capital in Malabar. The British later shortened the name. Remains of the laterite fort built here in his time still stand. The railway reached Kozhikode over a bridge at Feroke in 1888.
The town is also where Kerala’s tile industry took root. A tile factory with German missionary roots grew into the Commonwealth Tile Factory, still the best known of more than a dozen factories in the town.
